Progress Update, Week of October 11, 2021

During the week of October 11 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued removing sediment near the Union Street Bridge.

The cofferdam removal at the Douglass Street bulkhead was completed and the upland workzone was demobilized.

Over the coming weeks the GRT will prepare for a demonstration of In Situ Stabilization (ISS), a remediation process by which contaminants are rendered immobile through reactions with stabilizing compounds mixed directly into the soil or sediment. The upcoming demonstration will involve stabilization of a small target area, followed by analysis of the results. The demonstration is expected to be completed in Winter 2021.

In addition, the GRT is preparing to install sheet pile bulkheads at Degraw street, along the west side of the Canal. Bulkhead installation will begin at Degraw street in November.
